Notre Dame’s Aviana West (18) spikes the ball against New London’s Sophie Mallet (18) in the Class 1A regional first-round volleyball tournament Monday at Father Minett Gymnasium.
Notre Dame’s Lexi Korschgen (17) celebrates a winning point against New London in the Class 1A regional volleyball tournament Monday at Father Minett Gymnasium.
Notre Dame volleyball coach Mike Davis said there was something missing from his team.
He just couldn’t put his finger on it.
Two weeks ago, Davis switched senior Lauren Krieger from setter to libero and inserted junior Lexi Korschgen at setter.
Suddenly, all is right with the world again.
With Korschgen running the offense, the Nikes overcame a slow start to post a 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 victory over New London in a Class 1A regional first-round match Monday at Father Minett Gymnasium.
Notre Dame (25-14) advances to play at Moravia (19-8) in a regional quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
New London finishes with a 9-18 record.
With a little late tweaking, Notre Dame’s offense is finding new life.
“Lolo (Krieger) had been setting previously and she’s done super well. She prepared us for the upcoming games. I’m so proud of her for coming out this year and playing her best. She’s been doing amazing,” said Korschgen, who put up 38 assists. “All my teammates have been helping me come in, telling me where I’m at in the rotation. I think it’s working out really well.”
Davis, wanting to shore up the defense, made the switch to Korschgen at setter. Korschgen set for the JV team this season, so it was nothing new for her.
“Lexi is more of a traditional setter than Lo,” Davis said. “She knows the position. She’s got better hands. Lo’s a little better athlete out there. We like the way she played at the last tournament.
“Having Lo back there really helps settle our defense, too. We’re going to see how it goes. We can go back if we need to, but we’re going to run with it and see if we can get a little more spark out of it.”
New London was making an adjustment of its own at setter.
Sophomore Katelyn Allen made her first start for the Tigers since undergoing surgery to have her appendix removed a month ago. She put up 11 assists and had four digs for the Tigers.
“Our setter hasn’t even touched a ball for four weeks,” New London coach Jackie Housman said. “She did really well. She was just released today. I thought she did great. She got her serves in for us. She did wonderful. She had an outstanding night. She’s pretty solid every time she steps on the court.”
New London controlled much of the opening set with Tysann Gipple and Sophie Malott taking control at the net. They combined for 23 kills and 28 digs.
A pair of kills by Maddy Knapp ended a see-saw first set that saw 10 ties and four lead changes.
“They came out and did everything they wanted to do. We were a little timid. We made some silly errors,” Davis said. “We got through that first one. It was rough, but after that we settled in and played a bunch of good ball.”
Seniors Aviana West and Taryn Stephens came through for the Nikes in the final two sets. West had 16 kills, while Stephens had 15 kills.
Notre Dame scored five points on the serve of Knapp and five more on the serve of Stephens to take control of the second set.
“We served the ball well. They serve-spot the ball really well,” Davis said. “When we do that, we make it tough on teams. We have been doing a good job of serving and serve receiving. Our offense has been better.
“It’s not bad, but it’s been better.”
New London lost its momentum late in the second set and would never regain it. Notre Dame used a seven-point run on West’s serve to seize control of the third set.
“We just kind of lost our offense. We couldn’t put our offense back together,” Housman said.
Notre Dame now turns its attention to Moravia, a team it beat last postseason.
“We’re going to be on a bus for two hours,” Davis said. “We’ve got plenty of time to think about it.”
