Notre Dame Wall of Fame Class of 2023 members are, from left, Randy Trine, Bill Walters, Dan Reid, Mary Jo Miller, Chris Chiprez, Kollin Alfred and Ryan Rump. They were honored before the varsity baseball game Friday night.

The baseball program at Notre Dame High School has a long and storied tradition, one that includes eight trips to the state tournament.
That includes a Class 1A state championship in 1982 and a runner-up finish in 1997.
Perhaps it was only fitting that three of the seven members of the Notre Dame Wall of Fame Class of 2023 were past or current Nike baseball coaches.
And that the induction ceremony took place Friday night at Winegard Field, the site of many memories for all three coaches.
Joining the Wall of Fame were former Notre Dame baseball coaches Dan Reid and Bill Walters and current Notre Dame coach Chris Chiprez, along with Kollin Alfred, Ryan Rump, Randy Trine and Mary Jo Miller.
In what may be the most impressive induction class thus far, seven new members took their rightful place for the legacy they left at Notre Dame.
“It’s nice to be recognized for our accomplishments here at Notre Dame. It’s very nice,” said Alfred, who coached the Notre Dame girls’ basketball team to a state championship in 2014 and took two other teams to state.
“To say I went in with Dan Reid, Mary Jo Miller, Randy Trine, Chris Chiprez ... it’s a real honor. That is an outstanding group of people.”
Reid coached baseball, football, basketball and track and field in his time at Notre Dame, leading the Nikes to the state baseball championship in 1982.
He went on to a Hall of Fame baseball coaching career at Burlington High School.
Walters, who was a member of that 1982 state title team, coached the Nikes to back-to-back state tournament appearances in 1997 and 1998.
A 1982 graduate of Notre Dame, Walters went into school administration after leaving Notre Dame and currently is Superintendent at Abingdon-Avon in Illinois.
Trine served as athletics director, head basketball and golf coach, and helped coach football at Notre Dame.
Trine, an accomplished amateur golfer, went on to coach girls basketball and boys golf at BHS, leading the Grayhounds to the Class 4A state championship in 1999 and runner-up finishes in 1998 and 2000.
Trine joins his children — Jason, Justin and Kim — in the Wall of Fame.
“I coached with Don Gibbs, Harold Tackleson and Dan Reid here. It’s a privilege to go into the Wall of Fame,” Trine said.
“It’s great to be in there with my kids. It’s pretty neat. If you look at the Wall of Fame, there are some great people in there.”
Chiprez is the current head baseball coach of the Nikes, leading them to the state tournament in 2020.
He was a multi-sport standout during his days as an athlete at Notre Dame.
Rump, a Fort Madison Aquinas graduate, coached Notre Dame boys basketball for 10 years, leading them to state tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009.
His teams averaged 18 wins per season.
Miller has taught at Notre Dame for 47 years and continues to serve in education and has no plans of stopping anytime soon.
