Eugene Joseph Bredar

Eugene Joseph “Jeep” Bredar, 95, of Burlington died Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 3, 1928, in Davenport, he was the son of Lorenz and Alice Munchrath Bredar. On Aug. 8, 1953, he married Jeanne Belle-Isle Norton in Burlington. She died on April 20, 2007.

He attended St. Ambrose University and graduated with a business administration degree. Eugene was an entrepreneur at heart, involved in sales and marketing and various other things throughout his life. However, he spent the last 20 years of his career in the beauty supply industry.

He was proud to be a United States Army veteran and served during the Korean conflict.

His Catholic faith was very important to Eugene, and he instilled those values in his children. Eugene was active at Divine Mercy Parish as an usher and lector for many years.

He was very involved in the creation and development of Notre Dame High School. He helped to start steamboat days in Burlington and he was a past member of Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees among others.

He was very active in the community. Eugene enjoyed playing golf and wood working. He loved creating elaborate prank gifts for his grandkids, he was known to be a jokester, always very competitive, and always planning a bet or playing a game.

Survivors include his two daughters, Lisa (Mike) Robinson of Wentzville, Missouri, and Molly (Scott) Smith of Burlington; four sons Patrick (Tammy) Bredar of Burlington, Michael (Vicki) Bredar of Burlington, Barton (Radonna) Bredar of Danville, Kentucky, David (Andrea) Bredar of Charlotte, North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Joan (Jim) Cleary of Athens, Georgia.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill Bredar and sister Rita Schebler.

Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Bredar will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Rev. James Flattery as the Celebrant. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Are Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House and Notre Dame High School.
