The rain stopped just in time for the Burlington Municipal Band’s season-opening concert last Sunday afternoon, and so the Teddy Bears’ Picnic and education concert went off without a hitch.
“We were so happy to see all those friendly faces out in the park. It’s so great to have our 96th season underway,” said Jim Priebe, the Muni Band’s foundation director, and a musician of the band who sometimes conducts.
This Sunday, Notre Dame band director Carmen Lachnitt will conduct the band’s concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Crapo Park band shell.
Lachnitt has asked recent Notre Dame graduate Adrian Benson to be the vocal soloist, according to the Muni Band’s website.
Benson twice was selected for the All-State choir and was named outstanding soloist three times in the Iowa High School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Festival.
The son of Tim and Gretel Benson, he will be attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls next year as a music major.
Sunday’s concert will feature an interesting variety of selections including the music of Sousa, Holst and the Broadway musical Les Miserables.
Selections to be performed will include: “Blue Moon” by Richard Rodgers and “Moon River” by Henry Mancini, both performed by Benson; “Second Suite for Military Band in F Major” by Gustav Holst; “Powhatan’s Daughter March” by Sousa; “Les Miserables,” arranged for band by Warren Barker; “Klezmer Dances” by Stephen Bulla; “Moorside March” by Gustav Holst and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by Sousa.
Bring a lawn chair or a blanket or sit on provided benches.
In the case of rain, the concert will move to the James Madison school by the park.
Since the band has to move and set up its equipment, the decision is announced by 5:30 p.m. Sunday at muniband.org, Burlington Municipal Band on Facebook and on radio station KBUR.
The band’s website offers livestream during the concert, and the concert also is repeated on KBUR at 9 p.m. Sunday.
The band exists through donations. To learn more, visit the website.
